Could Metallica be preparing a surprise performance at Yankee Stadium in New York to honor retiring Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera? That’s the rumor reported by the New York Daily News yesterday (August 26th), with the paper noting Metallica will be in town to perform at the Apollo Theater on September 21st, one day before the Yankees stage a celebration of Rivera’s career on September 22nd prior to their game against the San Francisco Giants — who happen to be Metallica’s hometown team. And why would Metallica pay tribute to the legendary Rivera, who’s calling it quits after nearly 20 years with the Yanks? Because for most of those years, the future Baseball Hall of Famer has been coming out of the bullpen to close out games to the tune of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” playing on the stadium’s P.A. system. (Check out his final appearance at MLB’s All-Star Game at CitiField in Queens, NY last month. Respect!) The Daily News contacted Yankees reps about the matter, but a team spokesperson would not comment on “any events surrounding Mo’s ceremony.” Metallica performed at Yankee Stadium once before, nearly two years ago in Sep 2011 when the “Big Four” tour with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth stopped there. As previously reported, Metallica is playing at the Apollo to promote the release of its new movie, Metallica Through The Never. The 3D IMAX film will make its world premiere on Monday, Sep 9th at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening on Sep 27th at IMAX theaters and expanding onto additional screens on Oct 4th. Metallica & hardDriveRadio are offering a lucky listener a trip to Metallica’s hometown to attend the premiere of the film on Sep 16th. Are you a hardDriveRadio listener who is NOT YET a registered hardDriveRadio Radical? WTF are you waiting for????!!!!!!….Pearl Jam posted the video for “Mind Your Manners” and I also have the title track from their new album, Lightning Bolt, available to watch. It was a fan-filmed clipfrom their Wrigley Field performance earlier this summer. (Man, September is nearly here. Ugh!) We’re trying really hard to get an in-person interview with the band. Stay tuned. Very excited for the new album which drops Oct 15th….Pulse of Radio reports on a story I read about yesterday over at Metal Hammer‘s site. Nine Inch Nails‘ set at England’s Reading Festival on Sunday night (August 25th) was marred by drama and tension, according to reports from Rolling Stone and Gigwise. The main issue seemed to revolve around the question of why Nine Inch Nails was going on before Scottish band Biffy Clyro, who were closing out the long-running and prestigious event, and who were apparently giving NIN some hassles about the group’s elaborate stage production as well. Reznor tweeted before NIN’s set, “Should be an unusual show tonight at Reading . . .” before adding in a second post, “. . . the lying promoter and the band following us (whoever the f*** they are) f***ed us on our production.” Whatever happened reportedly had a definite effect on Reznor’s mood and NIN’s show. The frontman barely spoke throughout the set and seemed to be having a lousy time onstage, according to Rolling Stone, saying at one point, “F*** rock ‘n’ roll, by the way.” His comment may have been a veiled jab at Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, who spoke from the stage earlier in the evening about the power of rock music. Festival promoter Melvin Benn hit back at Reznor later, telling NME, “The truth is there’s no truth in (Reznor’s) statement. The contract hasn’t changed since they signed up to it.” Nine Inch Nails will release its first new album in five years, Hesitation Marks, on Sep 3rd (that’s next Tuesday.) The band will kick off a North American arena tour on Sep 28th in St. Paul, MN, and hopefully Trent will be in a better mood. Here’s a fan-filmed performance of a new tune called “Copy Of A” from his set at Reading…More items from our friends at Pulse today round out the report. Not only is Avenged Sevenfold releasing their KILLER new album Hail To The King today, Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd releases his solo debut, In Deep Owl, today (Aug 27th). The disc was written over a four-year period and recorded at a studio in an industrial part of Seattle. In addition to Shepherd, the album features contributions from Soundgarden/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron and former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain. For more information on Shepherd, visit http://hbenshepherd.com/ ….Broadway Idiot, a documentary about how the Green Day concept album American Idiot became a Broadway musical, is hitting theaters this fall. The film, which looks at the challenges of adapting the “punk opera” to the stage, will open on Oct 11th in New York before expanding to other theaters around the country and video on demand a week later on the 18th. The film also chronicles how working in theater affected Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who starred in the Broadway show and is currently writing a new rock musical based on Shakespeare‘s Much Ado About Nothing. (The Hollywood Reporter)….And finally today, Wind-Up Records (home of Filter, Seether, Young Guns and more!) is running a charity auction of unique and exclusive music memorabilia that the label has collected over the past 15 years from the acts on its roster.
