We New Yorkers know this day is unlike any other and we will never forget the events that have marked this day in infamy. We remember all the victims of the terrible tragedies in New York, Washington, DC and Somerset, PA. We will never forget…..Yesterday was outstanding for this producer and music fan. I got to interview three favorite bands and got to see two of them live. Alter Bridge’s Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy were in the hardDrive Studios and we yakked for quite some time about their new album, Fortress, which comes out on Oct 08th. And I heard some stuff if I was TMZ would reveal, but homie don’t play that. Anyhow, please take a moment to listen to the Alter Bridge stream when it’s available. The songs are great, heavy and probably the best material from the band so far. (P.S. BTW, thanks to MidwestMusicScene for mentioning me and taking my recommendation about the Gemini Syndrome album, which dropped yesterday, called Lux.) Then after finishing up interview notes, Katherine Turman (check out her great new book, Louder Than Hell: The Definitive Oral History of Heavy Metal with co-author Jon Weiderhorn) and I hopped in her car and drove (or crawled to Huntington, LI. It’s amazing that it takes nearly 2 hours to drive less than 40 miles.) So once we arrived, and got VIP Diva treatment with our own parking spot by the band’s semi, we were warmly welcomed into the Stone Temple Pilots‘ shiny new bus and chatted intensely for over an hour with Robert, Dean, Chester and Eric. Despite the fact the band is still in legal limbo with Weiland, we touched on so much and so many emotional moments were revealed. Can’t wait to share the material with you in the coming weeks here on hardDrive and hardDrive XL with Lou Brutus! Their set was AMAZING and despite the fact I was dead tired, we stayed til the end of the night. At one point, Richard Patrick of Filter came out to do “Piece of Pie” with the band and the crowd went nuts! If this tour is coming to your town, please do check it out. Meanwhile, hussled my butt over to Filter’s bus and talked to Richard and guitarist Johnny Radtke before their set. Good times with Richard, we go back to the early days of Filter. There are some great dates coming up from them with Red, Otherwise and We As Human. I would love to see them open for Nine Inch Nails. I think the reunion with Trent would be Kill-Er. During Filter’s set, Richard crowd surfs and while he was singing, whether it happened accidently or not, Rich yelled out laughingly, “Somebody grabbed my balls!” Oh man! People are bad! Geez….Pulse of Radio reports Halestorm will release a new EP called ReAniMate 2.0: The CoVerRs eP on October 15th. The six-song EP follows up 2011’s ReAniMate, which featured the band’s renditions of songs by Skid Row, Guns N’ Roses, Lady Gaga and the Beatles. The new collection will feature tracks originally written and recorded by Judas Priest, Daft Punk, AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac and Marilyn Manson. We asked singer Lzzy Hale if the band had ever been denied permission to record a song for one of these EPs: “We were denied after the fact, actually, on the last cover EP. We thought we had gotten approval for ‘Out Ta Get Me’ by Guns N’ Roses, and apparently everybody had approved it but Axl — but nobody told him. So we had recorded it, we released it, and then he found out and I guess — what was the stipulation? We, like, could do it digitally but not physically, which I thought was kind of weird.” Hale said about the new EP, “Like our first ReAniMate EP, the songs included here are a collection of both our favorite songs and songs to challenge ourselves. We decided to go more ‘bare bones’ with this EP, meaning minimal production with live, gritty performances. We recorded this EP the week of the Grammys, so the excitement and debauchery you hear through your speakers is very real.” ReAniMate 2.0 track listing:
1. “Dissident Aggressor” (originally performed by Judas Priest)
2. “Get Lucky” (originally performed by Daft Punk)
3. “Shoot To Thrill” (originally performed by AC/DC)
4. “Hell Is For Children” (originally performed by Pat Benatar)
5. “Gold Dust Woman” (originally performed by Fleetwood Mac)
6. “1996” (originally performed by Marilyn Manson) Hey that’s the year hardDrive came on the air! Looking forward to this set!….Speaking of releases, Rise Against released its new rarities compilation, titled Long Forgotten Songs: B-Sides & Covers 2000-2013, on Tuesday (September 10th). The 26-song set ranges from tracks dating all the way back before the Chicago band’s first album to songs recorded during the sessions for its most recent release, 2011’s Endgame. Among the tracks are recent covers of Bruce Springsteen‘s “The Ghost Of Tom Joad” and Bob Dylan‘s “The Ballad Of Hollis Brown,” both of which happen to be about the struggles of everyday working people. McIlrath told Billboard, “I think that punk music has always kind of had an obligation to speak up for the underdog.”…Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic were interviewed this week on National Public Radio about the upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of In Utero, the final studio album recorded by the group before frontman Kurt Cobain took his own life in April 1994. Recalling the Minnesota studio in which the album was cut, Grohl said, “I’m sure it’s a beautiful place to hang out in in the summertime. Unfortunately, we were there in February. It’s outside of Minneapolis. It was, like, subzero arctic temperature. But that room where we recorded the stuff, the room sounded great and it was a comfortable place to be.” The pair also spoke about “Forgotten Tune,” a previously undiscovered instrumental track recorded during the In Utero sessions that will make its debut on the reissue. Novoselic said, “We found it and were like, what is this song? And I don’t really remember. And (we were) like, what do you want to call it? And I’m like, I don’t want to give it a name, so let’s just call it ‘Forgotten Tune’ and let people make up their own minds what it is.” “Forgotten Tune” will be among the 70 tracks included on the three-disc deluxe reissue of In Utero, which is set for release on Sep 24th. The original album was released Sep 13, 1993. The rest of the material on the jam-packed set will consist of remastered, remixed, rare and unreleased demos, B-sides, alternate takes and live recordings, along with two different mixes of the 12-song album. The In Uteropackage will be issued in several configurations, including a three-CD/one-DVD “Super Deluxe” edition, plus two-CD, three-LP and digital versions…In just four weeks, Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare–the ultimate Halloween music and horror event–will open its doors at FEARPlex in Pomona, just outside Los Angeles. Check out an exclusive video for a preview of the most exciting and horrifying attractions from Rob Zombie here! And watch for a contest really soon!…… Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has posted an update at his official website in which he recaps the band’s just-finished North American tour, while also revealing that he headed right back into the hospital for more cancer treatments as soon as the trek was completed. Iommi wrote, “Well, we’ve finished the U.S. leg of our world tour. It was a bit longer than I would have liked as I’ve already been in hospital having another infusion. The tour was amazing though, you always hope it’s going to go well but you never know, it’s great to look out and see so many people of all ages.” Sabbath has been touring in support of 13, the first Sabbath album in 35 years to feature him, bassist Geezer Butler and singer Ozzy Osbourne playing together. Iommi wrote, “The new songs have been going down well, we’ve played them enough now so we’re comfortable and that helps the performance.” Iommi revealed in January of 2012 he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, which is described by the Mayo Clinic as “a cancer of the lymphatic system, the body’s disease-fighting network.” Thoughts and prayers go out to him….Happy 73rd to director Brian (Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Scarface) De Palma.
