Well, it’s finally here! Metallica‘s new movie, Metallica Through The Never, opens for a one-week limited run in IMAX theaters today (Sep 27th), before expanding to more screens around the country on Oct 4th. The film, a blend of concert movie and fictional narrative, stars Dane DeHaan as a member of Metallica’s road crew who is sent on a mysterious mission while the band performs at a sold-out arena and events outside grow more bizarre. We asked bassist Robert Trujillo if he could name a part of the movie that was his favorite: “There’s a lot of favorite parts. It’s hard, there’s so much going on and there’s a lot of exciting moments. At the end of the day, the whole idea is really, you know, you’re going on a roller coaster ride and it’s going to be an adventure. Embrace it, hold on and have a good time.” Hard to believe the band put up $20 million of their OWN money to make this film, without a big-time marquis name! (Seems to me that probably paid to rent the cameras and build the stage!) But the thing of it is, it really is unlike any music film you will ever see and for whatever it costs to go to your IMAX theater for a great night out, this would be well worth the ticket price, even if you weren’t a fan! Everything’s better in 3D, right? Would love to hear what you think of the film, so if you see it, drop us a note and Lou Brutus might mention you on the air and we’ll send your feedback to the band! Here’s another behind the scenes clip for ya….There’s this curious festival that has grown over the years here in NYC called the CBGB Festival. It was started to honor the passing of one of the cities and the NY punk & rock scene’s most iconic club founded by the legendary Hilly Kristal. I saw bands like The Ramones, The Talking Heads, Iggy & The Stooges, The Dictators, Television, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, The Sex Pistols, The Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and others I can hardly remember back in the 70’s, The Police played there, and then later bands like Korn, Rage Against the Machine and Green Day. It became the mecca for rock bands who would stop in NYC and would flock to see the small, narrow, grungy, dark, beer-soaked, cigarette-smelling, wooden-panelled club with walls of concert posters and stickers layered over each other as the decades passed. The dressing rooms didn’t even have doors, they were stalls behind the stage. And the disgusting and mostly broken public bathrooms (no mirror in the ladies room!) were down the same hall and down a precarious narrow flight of old creaky foot-worn stairs myself and countless others have tripped and fallen down or up, in some cases both. But the place held this magical vibe about it. It closed Oct 15, 2006. This year, the festival will take place here in NYC from Oct 9th to the 13th. Ex-Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan will deliver the keynote address for the 2013 CBGB Music & Film Festival, which will feature more than 500 artists in over 175 venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan. There will be over 125 speakers and 100 music-related films. The new film CBGB, based on the behind-the-scenes story of the legendary club, will also debut at the festival. (Alan RIckman plays Hilly, Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters plays Iggy Pop ) In addition to his music projects with Velvet Revolver and Walking Papers, Duff is also a writer, actor, and producer who also started a wealth management company for musicians. (Thanks Pulse of Radio.)….Deftones have released a video for their newest single “Romantic Dreams.” The video features skater Jason Park and was directed by skater and filmmaker Brett Novak. Band member Chino Moreno told Blabbermouth.net, “When we started this record cycle, we decided that we didn’t want to make any videos whatsoever. They’re not much fun to make and they usually turn out pretty corny. But this was an idea that we were interested in because we’re all very keen skateboarders and we like the idea of marrying one of our songs to someone as talented as Jason Park.“….My boys Korn recently took over the Hollywood Guitar Center to film an episode of ‘Guitar Center Sessions,’ and they’ve just been named the latest act to be inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk. The private, invite-only ceremony will take place Oct. 8 at the Hollywood Guitar Center location on Sunset Boulevard. Oct. 8 is the same day the band release their 11th album, The Paradigm Shift. Jonathan Davis commented, “When you look at the names of the other people inducted here all you can say is, ‘Wow, what an honor!’” Munky added, “When we started out we were five guys in a garage with a dream. I’d like to think we tried our best to create some great music and an innovative sound, but to be honest we are truly humbled to be included here.” Guitar Center RockWalk Chairman Dave Weiderman added, “Korn is about as innovative and influential as they come. They have been purveyors of metal’s progression since their formation and are even credited with creating the Nu Metal subgenre. For these reasons, and many more, Korn is exactly the type of band the RockWalk is here to honor.” Korn will take their place alongside such legendary acts as AC/DC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Jane’s Addiction and more. Right on, boys, right on! …..And finally today, Pearl Jam posted a nine minute video interview to promote their forthcoming album, Lightning Bolt, due Oct 15th. Check it out here. The piece was directed by Danny Clinch and the band was interviewed by a number of well-known friends including film director Judd Apatow, musician and ‘Portlandia’ star Carrie Brownstein, former NFL player living with ALS Steve Gleason and surfing legend Mark Richards. Well, at least they are doing something because I sure can’t get an interview with them! LOL…If you’re a fan of guitarist Slash then you just might like his burger.
