Two songs from Dave Grohl‘s Sound City: Reel To Reel documentary, released earlier this year, have made the shortlist of numbers that could be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The first, “Cut Me Some Slack,” (watch it live here) was a collaboration between Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana, including Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear. Grohl told us that they were so starstruck working with McCartney that they didn’t realize how momentous the occasion was for other reasons: “When we were recording the song with McCartney, that really was the first time Pat and Krist and I had sat down in a room and written a song from scratch and jammed it out like Nirvana used to do. That was the first time that had really happened in 20-something years. Because Paul was there, we sort of forgot that. So the first couple of hours we were there, we were so focused and freaked out on Paul McCartney being in the same room that we forgot, like, ‘Wait a minute, we used to be Nirvana, this is weird,’ you know.” “Cut Me Some Slack” is also nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award. The second Sound City track that made the Oscar shortlist is Stevie Nicks‘ “You Can’t Fix This.” Other numbers on the 75-song Oscar shortlist include Coldplay‘s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire offering, “Atlas,” U2‘s Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom tribute “Ordinary Love,” Florence And The Machine‘s “Over The Love” from The Great Gatsby, M83‘s title track from Oblivion and Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O‘s “The Moon Song” from Her. The list will be whittled down to the final five nominees, which will be announced on Jan 16th.
