Also classic news on these guys! It was just over a month ago that Foo Fighters hosted their inaugural CalJam festival in San Bernardino, CA, a tribute to the California Jam events of the 1970s. The lineup included Queens Of The Stone Age, Cage The Elephant, Liam Gallagher, Royal Blood, The Struts, The Kills and a dozen more acts. Now the Foos have announced that CalJam will return next year, expanding to two days and taking place on Oct 5th and 6th at the same location, Glen “Hell” Helen Regional Park & Festival Grounds.
The Foos’ headlining set at last month’s event included guest appearances from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, Gallagher, Rick Astley, sax legend Dave Koz and the Kills’ Alison Mosshart. Grohl also made an appearance during Liam Gallagher’s set earlier in the day.
Cal Jam 2017 also featured camping, a water park, carnival rides, a recording studio, a giant skate ramp and a Foo Fighters museum. Parked outside was the white limo from the “White Limo” music video and Grohl’s stage throne from 2015, when he toured with a broken leg. The festival kicked of the Foos’ world tour in support of its ninth studio album, Concrete And Gold. There is no word yet on which acts will be appearing at CalJam 18.
Bummer news out of the Word Alive camp! This news coming from Alternative Press:
At last night’s show in Los Angeles, the Word Alive’s vocalist Telle Smith suffered a compound fracture during the band’s last song. He has six weeks recovery ahead of him, and in an effort not to miss any shows, he’s planning to perform while sitting down for the remainder of the band’s tour with I Prevail, We Came As Romans and Escape The Fate. (Major props for that, right?)
However, he will be facing some major hospital costs, as he’s not covered by health insurance, and there are a few ways you can help. Smith shared a few photos from his hospital visit, along with the caption:
Last night in Los Angeles I suffered a compound fracture during our last song. Casted up for 6 weeks with physical therapy on the horizon, but I don’t plan on missing any shows. I’m going to try to perform while sitting down, so if you’re coming out to the remaining dates please go twice as hard for me. Although Slipknot percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan recently said there were as many as 30 new pieces of music written for the band’s next album, singer Corey Taylor — currently out touring with his other group Stone Sour — says he’s heard about as many of them as you have. Taylor explained to Loudwire, “I haven’t even heard any of this stuff. In true Slipknot fashion, I’m being told through the press that this is all going on. So it is what it is. I can guarantee you that it’s very creative, I can guarantee you that it’s dark. I can guarantee you that it’s going to be unlike anything I’ve ever heard before.”
Now before you raise an eyebrow, this is not uncommon. When Clown says 30 pieces of music, that’s what he means. Full songs may not be done yet, and normally, that is when the singer writing the lyrics usually is in the loop. So this is no biggie, so don’t read anything into it! (Editor’s note)
Taylor has said Stone Sour will be touring for another 18 months behind its sixth album, Hydrograd, which came out last June and features the chart-topping single “Song #3.”
Crahan said a while back there’s always been room for outside projects within the world of Slipknot: “I feel the ‘Knot has always preached personal freedom. You know, ‘Don’t ever judge me.’ That’s what we do, man. We do what we want, we do as much as we want. We’ll go shed light to what we are individually out onto the world and then we’ll come together like we always do.”
Asked about switching from one act to the other, Taylor replied, “It’s not as difficult as you’d think. By the time that I’m done with one I’m kind of starting to get into the mindset of the other . . . I think that’s one of the reasons why I’m so glad that Stone Sour started to go in that hard rock direction, so it really becomes even easier to differentiate between the two.” Stone Sour performed two weekends ago at Ozzfest Meets Knotfest, which took place in San Bernardino, CA and also featured sets from Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and others. Pop Evil has unveiled the details of its 2018 Music Over Words Tour, which will support the band’s self-titled fifth studio LP. The trek will kick off on Feb 14th in Sault Saint Marie, MI at the Kewadin Casino, wrapping things up at the Fillmore in Detroit on Apr 6th. More dates will be announced in a few weeks. Singer Leigh Kakaty said, “It’s with great excitement to announce our US headline tour. We can’t wait to play our new material and see all our amazing fans across the states. It’s all about the music, it’s Music Over Words.”
Kakaty told us not long ago that he’s on a mission with every tour to win over more fans: “We’re just excited to just keep pushing and focus on that live show and hopefully expose our music to a whole set of new ears out there that maybe haven’t seen us live. So, you know, we’re really excited about focusing on building the fan base.“
Pop Evil will release its self-titled fifth album on Feb 16th. The first single is called “Waking Lions.” The set was produced by Kato Khandwala (The Pretty Reckless) in Nashville and Los Angeles, while the initial writing sessions were done in a rented lake house in Union, MI.
The band has been working on the new disc since April, with bassist Matt DiRito telling Detroit’s WRIF that the sessions were the band’s “longest time in the studio ever.” I’ve heard a few tunes, and they are by far some of the best work Pop Evil has done. The entire band is extremely excited about the new music!
Blabbermouth is reporting Nickelback‘s music video for the song “The Betrayal (Act III)” can be seen below. The track is taken from the band’s ninth album, Feed The Machine, which was released in June via BMG.
Nickelback leader Chad Kroeger told Music Choice about Feed The Machine: “This album is definitely heavier, as a whole, than a lot of our previous records. We’ve gone back to some pretty crunchy roots, and we’re happy about that. I mean, we’re always stretching off in different directions and trying different things, but we definitely went with more of an aggressive sound on this record.”
Kroeger called “The Betrayal (Act III)” “probably one of the hardest and heaviest songs we’ve ever put out… It is quite heavy; there’s a lot of screaming that goes on in that chorus,” he said. “I think we’ve all tasted a little betrayal in our days and it is not a flavor that I think any of us liked to swallow.”
As previously reported, Nickelback will return to Sin City in February 2018 for an impressive five-night run at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Monster Truck will open all five shows. The limited run is made even more special with the announcement that these shows will be Nickelback‘s only North American dates scheduled in 2018.
The Las Vegas shows are scheduled for Feb 23, 24, 27 and Mar 2 and 3, 2018. Following its Vegas run, the band will embark on the international leg of the “Feed The Machine” tour throughout the remainder of 2018.
Finally today, news was revealed original Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley passed away last week as a result of a heroin overdose. Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch has paid tribute to Chuck Mosley, saying that the ex-Faith No More singer and his former bandmates “were a huge part” of Korn‘s “everyday lives” in the early 1990s.
Mosley died last week at the age of 57. He sang on FAITH NO MORE‘s first two albums, 1985’s We Care A Lot and 1987’s Introduce Yourself. He was fired from the band and replaced by Mike Patton, who remains the group’s singer to this day.
In an Instagram post (Monday, Nov 13), Welch wrote: “I remember living in a tiny apartment in Burbank, California, living with most of the guys who would later form Korn. They were in their funk rock band called L.A.P.D. I was just hanging out drinking beer trying to figure out life. They were so into the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More, and I wanted nothing to do with those bands. Little did I know that Faith No More would grow on me so much that it changed my whole outlook of what metal could sound like. I remember Fieldy waking the whole house up every single day singing the background vocals for the song ‘We Care A Lot’ by Faith No More. Every morning he would scream, ‘whoa whoa uh oh!’ Drove us all crazy, but looking back now, it’s a funny memory. Faith No More with Chuck Mosley were a huge part of our everyday lives back then. Guys, we need to learn from all this. We are losing too many people to the disease of addiction. It’s a plague that’s sending the angel of death to wipe so many of our people out and it’s got to stop! Please, get help with whatever you’re struggling with. Initiate conversations with the Lord every day. Religious people make prayer out to be some holier than thou thing, but all it is, is talking to God like a friend. Face to face. Heart to heart. RIP Chuck Mosley, I’m so grateful that you and your family came to see us a couple months ago at our show.”
