Good morning Radicals! Apologies to anyone who had their hopes dashed about new Tool music!
Tool fans got the shock of their lives on Monday morning when Google sent out a news alert announcing that the band’s new album had been released. The alert read, “IllutionWorld by Tool was released today,” prompting an online frenzy as fans scurried to find out the deal — but it wasn’t exactly what they hoped for.
It turns out that IllutionWorld is a musical effort, only not by a progressive heavy rock act but by a rapper named TOOL$ who posted it on Soundcloud.
Fans reacted strongly on Twitter, with one writing, “Google nearly gave me a heart attack,” while another got right to the point and said, “OK @Google, go f**k yourself.”
Tool finally entered the studio this spring to record the band’s first album in more than 12 years. Legal issues, illness, a drawn-out writing process and other challenges kept the band from entering the studio until this past March. The yet-to-be-titled follow-up to 2006’s 10,000 Days is set to be released sometime in early 2019.
Guitarist Adam Jones told us a while back that the loyalty of Tool’s fans allows the band to record and tour on its own terms: “Other bands who are successful come to our shows or see, like, our thing and go, ‘I don’t get it, dude. I don’t get how you do this. You’re not really on radio, you’re not, you know, you don’t play the game.’ And it’s because our fans are very passionate and we take kind of a back door to it.”
Disturbed paid tribute to late Pantera and Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott by performing a cover version of the Pantera classic “Walk” on Saturday night, July 14th at this year’s Rock Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin.
Before launching into the song, Disturbed frontman David Draiman told the crowd: “Our very first Ozzfest, Pantera was on the main stage. And every night — every night — somehow, I ended up finding my way backstage to the Pantera dressing room; in fact, I think most of the band did. And they were always so welcoming — they had the warmest heart, and Vinnie especially.”
Draiman then related how Vinnie’s brother, late Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, wasn’t initially into Disturbed’s music. He explained how the brothers came out to see Disturbed play in Chicago at another edition of Ozzfest, with Draiman recalling, “Vinnie and Dime were both blown away, and Vinnie became such a dear friend and such a huge supporter. And I miss him so very, very much, and I know you guys do too. I’m sorry — I’m starting to get a little choked up here.”
Vinnie Paul Abbott died in his sleep at his home in Las Vegas on June 22nd at the age of 54. It is suspected that he died of a heart attack, although the coroner’s office has yet to report its findings.
Deftones have announced the first annual Dia De Los Deftones, slated for November 3rd at Petco Park at the Park in San Diego, California. This all-ages lineup includes Future, Linkin Park‘s Mike Shinoda, local punk legends Rocket From The Crypt and more.
Singer Chino Moreno said about the event, “For years, we’ve played on festivals with such amazing and diverse lineups and that is what we have achieved with our first line-up for Dia De Los Deftones. We want this event to be a celebration; with the incredible artists we’ve assembled, and the experiences we’re curating for the festival site, it’s going to be a wonderful day and night for all who join us.”
Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter told us a while back that playing live is the best part of being in a band: “It’s all good, you know. We’re just doing what we enjoy. I mean, playing shows is, next to writing our own music — we actually only write new music to play shows, ’cause we actually enjoy playing the shows the most. I think that’s what everyone’s true passion is, you know, the fact that we get to play our own music for people that enjoy it.”
Tickets for Dia De Los Deftones go on sale this Friday (July 20th) at 10:00 a.m. PT. Tickets start at $75 and will be available at Ticketmaster.com. Presale opportunities will be available on Tuesday, (July 17th) also starting at 10:00 a.m PT.
Moreno recently confirmed that Deftones are working on music for their ninth studio album, which will follow up 2016’s Gore LP.
Rob Zombie said in a new interview with Loudwire that the famous 2012 beef between him and Marilyn Manson, which flared up on the first edition of the Twins Of Evil tour, was over soon after it began. It started when Manson threatened onstage in Detroit to kick Zombie’s butt after Manson’s set had been cut short. Zombie responded in kind, telling the crowd, “Some tours do not f**king go together. Some people are just so full of s**t, it drives you f**king crazy.”
Zombie said now that the whole thing was blown way out of proportion. He explained, “I always knew we would do the tour again, because last time was great. There was one little incident and then we did the entire U.S., and then we did all of Europe together. So, the tour was great, especially the European part was really fantastic. So, we always knew we would do it together again.”
Zombie continued, “By the end of the tour, it was great . . . By the time (the incident) was news to the public, it was already old news to us. We stopped caring about anything that happened five years ago. There’s no negative anything.”
The current Twins Of Evil tour launched last week and was commemorated by the release of a new studio version of the Beatles‘ “Helter Skelter,” sung by both Manson and Zombie. The pair have also performed the track live together on the tour, which next stops in Cleveland tonight.
That’s a wrap, have an awesome day!
