Good morning Radicals! Hope everyone had a great weekend. Let’s start the week off right with some fresh music news in Dirt:
Disturbed frontman David Draiman was asked in a new interview with German outlet Deutsche Welle about his decision to remove his signature double piercings from his chin, both of which were customized for his face. Draiman replied, “They’re kind of a pain in the butt, to be honest. It just felt kind of weird walking around like a 45-year-old Hot Topic kid . . . I just felt it was time.”
Draiman was doing the interview on behalf of the band’s new album, Evolution. He recently described the LP as Disturbed’s version of Metallica‘s breakthrough 1991 “black album,” which took that band to a new level of success and mainstream popularity.
Draiman explained, “It’s simply a matter of something that every rock and every metal band aspires to — they all want to write that record that takes them to the next level. And that’s what the ‘Black Album’ did for Metallica and that’s what I’m hoping this record does for us.”
Evolution is due out this Friday, October 19th. The band released a new song from the disc over the weekend called “The Best Ones Lie.” It follows previous songs “Are You Ready” and “A Reason To Fight.”
Disturbed recently announced the 26 initial North American cities that will be part of the first leg of the band’s early 2019 Evolution tour, but have not finalized the exact dates or venues yet.
Chevelle has shared a song called “In Debt To The Earth” that appears on the trio’s upcoming collection, 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides And Rarities. The track was initially an iTunes bonus tune for the band’s 2007 album Vena Sera and is described as “vintage Chevelle.”
Frontman Pete Loeffler told us how the collection of hard-to-find songs came together: “It’s something that my brother Sam (Loeffler, drummer) and I have been talking about for years. Just kind of putting everything together, you know, B-sides. We left a few things off, but you know, this is a lot of it. This is 12 songs that didn’t really see a whole lot of daylight. This was a good way to give some of the diehards, you know, a place to go to have everything kind of summed up in a nice little package.”
12 Bloody Spies will be released on October 26th. The Chicago trio announced its arrival by sending letters to 12 of their biggest fans. The collection spans everything from an acoustic version of “Sleep Apnea,” off 2009’s Sci-Fi Crimes, to an unearthed bonus track titled “Until You’re Reformed” from the now-classic Wonder What’s Next LP to “A Miracle,” recorded as a bonus track for The North Corridor in 2016.
Chevelle will take the stage at Buzzfest in The Woodlands, Texas on October 27th.
Ozzy Osbourne underwent another surgery on Friday (October 12th) for an infection in his right hand that forced the singer to postpone four West Coast concerts — three in California and one in Las Vegas — and reschedule them for 2019.
Ozzy’s wife and manager Sharon Osbourne spoke about Ozzy’s condition during Friday morning’s edition of the CBS-TV program The Talk. She explained exactly what happened to Ozzy, saying, “(He) had a little cut on his thumb. You know when you pull the side of your nail, and he just left it. And then he hit it on a door. It started to get bigger and bigger, and then his middle finger, the same thing happened.”
She continued, “From a tiny thing here on the side of his nail, it had turned into two different infections in his hand.” Sharon added, “He had to have this operation where they cut the side of his thumb and (the middle) finger and they had to get rid of the infection. It’s been from something you think is absolutely nothing. It’s unbelievable.”
All four postponed shows are part of Ozzy’s “No More Tours 2,” a trek billed as the 69-year-old singer’s official farewell to lengthy world tours after five decades. Sharon said Ozzy was unhappy about missing the gigs, remarking, “He’s so upset. He feels he’s let down his audience, but I hope that everyone understands, and he’s gonna be back.”
Ticketholders for the four shows should hold on to their tickets, as they will be honored for the rescheduled dates. Refunds are also available at point of purchase. Ozzy is next scheduled to perform in Europe and Australia in February and March of next year.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl invited a a 10-year-old boy onstage to play a cover version of Metallica‘s “Enter Sandman” with the Foos in Kansas City, Missouri on Friday night, October 12th. Grohl called up Collier Cash Rule on stage and asked him if he could play guitar. The boy responded that he was a Metallica fan who knew how to play “a lot of Metallica songs” and proceeded to play the main riff to “Enter Sandman,” with the band joining in for a verse and chorus. Rule then played excerpts from “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” and “Wherever I May Roam” before leaving the stage with the guitar given to him by the band as a gift.
Slash and his band Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators are inviting fans to be in their new live music video in Los Angeles on Tuesday, October 16th at the Palladium in Hollywood, California. The band is encouraging fans to shoot video of the performance on their phones, which can then be uploaded through the Cinebody app for use in the clip itself.
Members of Korn, Godsmack, Hellyeah, Deftones, Shinedown and Sevendust were among the musicians who took part in a special tribute to late Pantera and Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott on Saturday, October 13th at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California. Among the songs played were “A New Level” and “Walk.” Abbott died on June 22nd of heart failure at the age of 54.
A walkthrough of the new haunted attraction in Des Moines, Iowa that’s a partnership between Slipknot and Slaughterhouse can be seen in a new video posted online. The 10,000 square-foot haunt features memorabilia from the group, meet-and-greet events, about 40 to 50 actors who bring the band’s “iconology, lore and culture” to life, and even an opportunity to go through the Slaughterhouse with a Slipknot member. The haunt runs every Thursday through Sunday in October, plus Halloween night. General admission tickets cost $20.
