Spooky salutations, Radicals! Who has an awesome costume planned for tonight?
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and Incubus will headline the Innings Festival at Tempe Beach Park on March 2nd and 3rd, 2019. Incubus will play on March 2nd, along with Sheryl Crow, Cake, Grouplove, Blues Traveler, Dorothy and others. Pearl Jam will close the show on the 3rd, preceded by Jimmy Eat World, Band Of Horses, Liz Phair, Mat Kearney and more.
There will also be special appearances by baseball legends Roger Clemens, Jake Peavy, Sean Casey, Huston Street and Eric Byrnes, along with curated food vendors, family activities and more. The festival is tied to the start of Arizona’s Cactus League Spring Training, for which fans travel from all over the country.
Tickets are on sale at inningsfestival.com. A two-day general admission pass costs $130, while one day is $99. A VIP pass, which gets you access to a viewing platform and lounge, costs $380 for two days and $250 for one. There are also pricier “platinum” VIP packages available along with layaway payment plans at all three levels.
This is the first 2019 show announcement for Eddie Vedder or Pearl Jam. The band is reportedly recording its new album, expected to be released next year.
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told Philadelphia radio station 93.3 WMMR that retirement is not anywhere on the 37-year-old band’s radar. Ulrich explained, “A lot of people are retiring, and we feel very energized and rejuvenated. I mean, we wanna go (a) long (time). We hope we can get another 20, 25 years out of (Metallica). I don’t know what it’s gonna look like, I don’t know what it’s gonna sound like, but that’s in our heads. So we’re not sitting there thinking retirement or this or that; we’re sort of more the opposite.”
Ulrich, who will turn 55 in December, added that he’s delighted to see younger generations of fans discovering Metallica’s music, saying, “There’s more younger kids at our shows than I can ever remember. Half the audience is under 20 . . . I don’t know if it’s a rite of passage, but it feels like it continues rather than regressing; it feels like it’s actually spreading.”
Ulrich’s comments echo those made by frontman James Hetfield, who said in 2015 that retirement was not on the agenda for Metallica. Hetfield said, “Look, musicians never retire. They just become less popular. People think you’ve retired, but no, I’m still writing. It’s a part of me. It’s what I do on this planet. That’s why I’ve been put here, I believe. And if I stop that, part of me dies. There’s no retirement. So we do what we do until physically we can’t do it.”
Hetfield told us a while back what keeps him going after more than three decades: “Well, for me writing music is like breathing, and being able to create things in a band that has a huge family out there and a following around the world, and be able to get my confusion and questions and insanity into this music and put out to the rest of the world so people can relate…there’s no better thing.”
Metallica is currently in the midst of a North American tour that brings the band to San Francisco on Saturday (November 3rd).
Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have signed on to score The Woman In The Window, an upcoming thriller starring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman and Julianne Moore. The film is due out in October 2019. The pair have also revealed that they scored the forthcoming sci-fi film Bird Box, which stars Sandra Bullock and premieres on Netflix in December.
Reznor and Ross currently have a score in theaters, for the Jonah Hill-directed movie Mid90s, and are also working on music for the upcoming HBO series Watchmen, based on the classic comic book of the same name.
Speaking to Variety about Watchmen, Reznor explained, “We reached out to (showrunner) Damon Lindelof and the HBO camp when I first heard about it, because I’ve been a fan of Damon since Lost. I was completely blown away by The Leftovers. Also, as a big fan of Watchmen, I appreciated the fearlessness that taking on that property and that IP would require.”
Nine Inch Nails is currently touring across North America in support of its latest EP, Bad Witch. The band is on a short break at the moment, but begins a three-night stand in New Orleans on November 23rd.
Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke revealed in a new interview that he was asked to take part in the band’s “Not In This Lifetime” reunion tour but had to turn it down. Clarke, who replaced founding guitarist Izzy Stradlin during the group’s 1991 Use Your Illusion tour, told Trunk Nation, “When it first started, they did reach out to me to come and play. My daughter, Frankie, has a band. They asked me the same day my daughter’s band was playing Lollapalooza (in July 2016), which was like the biggest break for her band. It was the same day they were playing Lollapalooza and I had to be there, and I couldn’t really give that up to go (jam with Guns).”
Clarke added that he was still open to getting onstage with the group at some point, saying, “I have nothing against it. It’s just that didn’t work out for me.” He also affirmed that he is on good terms with the members of Guns, remarking, “I mean, I’m still cool with Axl; I’m still cool with everybody. I have no ill feelings or anything.”
Clarke stayed with Guns N’ Roses for three years, exiting in 1994 and continuing to work as a producer and solo artist, while also playing in Slash’s Snakepit, Rock Star Supernova, Heart and other acts. Although he was inducted, he did perform at the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 alongside guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, and former GN’R drummers Steven Adler and Matt Sorum. Singer Axl Rose did not attend.
Three-fifths of the group’s classic lineup — Axl, Slash and McKagan — reunited in 2016 after two decades apart for the “Not In This Lifetime” tour, which is still ongoing and has become one of the highest grossing concert attractions of all time.
