The new Motley Crue biopic “The Dirt” is out today on Netflix! Shinedown frontman Brent Smith told the Lincoln Journal Star in a new interview that music artists can still make a living if they adapt to the ways that people consume music nowadays. Smith said, “You’ve got to adjust. I hear an older generation of bands pissing on streaming and downloading. Let me do you a service here — you’re essentially ruining your fan base by excluding a generation. It’s old guys and old girls complaining that they’re not making as much money anymore.”
Smith noted that music streaming has cratered record sales but shifted consumer spending on music to live shows, where his band thrives. He explained, “It’s actually enhanced and given a shot to the touring industry and has given employment to hundreds, thousands of people. It’s led to more venues being built and used, more shows and more people coming out.”
Smith told us that connecting with the fans any way they can is what keeps Shinedown going: “You know, I tell people I have one boss, and it’s everybody in the audience. They’re the reason that we’re here. At the end of the day, if you don’t have them, you have absolutely nothing. So I always tell them they’re the boss, and they should always remember that, no matter what band they see. They’re the reason why, you know, you keep this thing called rock ‘n’ roll alive.”
While the band as a whole may be willing to adapt to the way music is currently consumed, guitarist Zach Myers said in 2017 interview that he prefers buying and owning physical product. He told Rock Sins, “I still want to get a record. I don’t even have Pandora, I don’t have Spotify or Apple Music. I go and buy albums if I hear one song that I like. I don’t buy the song — I go and buy the entire album.”
Shinedown’s latest album, Attention Attention, came out last year and features the crossover hit “Get Up” and the new single “Monsters.”
The band recently announced new summer tour dates, beginning June 21st in the Woodlands, Texas and ending July 27th in Ridgefield, Washington. Badflower, Dinosaur Pile-Up and Broken Hands will tag along on the trek.
The last time I saw my beautiful boy! Happy Birthday to the best thing that ever arrived on the first day of spring! I love you and miss you so much!!
