Good morning Radicals! Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Here’s what’s up in the world of rock:
Slipknot singer Corey Taylor was asked in an interview with Trunk Nation if anyone online had guessed correctly at the identity of the band’s new ninth member, who fans have nicknamed “Tortilla Man.” Taylor replied, “I’ve seen a couple of things, and none of ’em have been right so far. I’m loving it, dude.”
One Reddit user posted an extensive theory online last week that the band’s new percussionist was Michael Pfaff a multi-instrumentalist who had worked on a previous project with Slipknot percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan.
On whether the band will keep the identity of “Tortilla Man” a mystery, Taylor said, “Even if somebody gets it right, we’re not gonna confirm it. It’s one of those things. For us, it’s more about getting the band out there. Because, to be honest, the one thing that kind of reminded us that the band is more important is that even after the album came out, people were still into the band no matter who was in it.”
Guitarist Jim Root told us that sharing the guy’s name is just not a priority: “We just don’t think about it. It’s not important, you know what I mean, to us. We’re focusing on the shows. They may be right and they may be wrong on who this guy is, and if people really want to know who the new guy is, they’ll dig and maybe someday they’ll find out.”
The mystery percussionist took over the spot previously held by Chris Fehn, who was kicked out of the band following an ongoing legal dispute over the band’s finances.
Foo Fighters returned to England’s Leeds Festival on Friday night (August 23rd) for their seventh headline slot at the event, where they were joined by several guests.
For “My Hero,” the band was joined by Dave Grohl‘s 13-year-old daughter Violet, with Dave telling the crowd, “This has been a special trip for me because on this trip we have a new Foo Fighter in the band with us. Let me tell you something — she is the best f**king singer I know.”
Grohl then introduced his daughter by telling another fan that it was not their turn to get onstage. Grohl explained, “You can put your sign down. You know why you can put your sign down? ‘Cause you know who’s gonna come out with me and sing right now? My daughter Violet is gonna come out and sing a song.”
The Foos were also joined by a Freddie Mercury lookalike, who they pulled from the crowd to help them with a cover of Queen‘s “Under Pressure.” The fan, who told the crowd his name was Ryan, was decked out in Mercury’s trademark yellow jacket and white trousers with the red and gold line down the side. He sang along on the tune with drummer Taylor Hawkins, who took lead vocals, while strutting the stage and mimicking the late musical icon.
Dave Grohl told us a while back that the Foos love to play cover songs whenever they can: “Honestly, we are like the highest paid cover band in the world. Whether it’s ‘School’s Out,’ ‘Cinnamon Girl,’ ‘Under Pressure,’ ‘Stay With Me,’ ‘Let There Be Rock,’ ‘Tom Sawyer,’ ‘Detroit Rock City’ — I mean, like, we’ve got this big long list.”
Foo Fighters will next play the Bourbon & Beyond festival in Louisville, Kentucky on September 20th.
Ghost mastermind and lead singer Tobias Forge has commented on the recent controversy surrounding Metallica, who Forge’s band has been supporting all summer on its European tour. It was recently revealed that representatives for Metallica allegedly partnered with concert promoter Live Nation to sell portions of their tickets directly to resellers, denying fans the chance to buy tickets first at face value.
Last month, Billboard obtained a recording of an 11-minute phone call from 2017 between Live Nation’s U.S. president of concerts, Bob Roux, longtime Metallica associate Tony DiCioccio and independent promoter Vaughn Millette in which they discussed the scheme. The members of Metallica reportedly were not aware of the venture.
Asked on Loudwire Nights if there was any way that thousands of Ghost tickets could be resold in this fashion without him knowing about it, Forge responded, “Probably. I have no idea. I’ve understood that the world of ticketing is a science, and that’s a science practiced by many peddlers outside of our reach, which is a problem. It’s a problem, because it tempers with the relationship between the artist and the fans, because, unfortunately, it can affect a fan very negatively.”
Saying he’s never known of an artist reselling tickets “intentionally,” Forge continued, “I find it sad to hear when that happens . . . but it seems like there’s very little that you can do about it. Especially if you’re one of the parts. There’s nothing, as an artist — especially on my level — there’s nothing that I can do to change that business.”
Ghost will embark on a North American tour this fall in support of its 2018 disc Prequelle, starting on September 13th in Bakersfield, California and wrapping on October 26th in Glens Falls, New York.
Rob Zombie has shared a new poster for his upcoming movie 3 From Hell and fans have expressed concern that one of the original cast members is absent from the main image.
The poster features Sheri Moon Zombie as Baby and Bill Moseley as Otis, but instead of veteran actor Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding — who appeared alongside Sheri and Moseley in House Of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects — it introduces Richard Brake as new character Foxy.
Fans are expecting a smaller amount of screen time and a less-than-happy ending for the character, with some speculating that the 80-year-old Haig’s advanced age and reportedly ill health has kept him from playing a major role in the film.
One fan wrote, “I assume Sid was just too old to film a whole movie and Rob had to think of a way to replace him. I assume Captain Spaulding gets the chair in prison. Don’t know how Brake is related to the family tho.”
Lionsgate and Saban Films will screen 3 From Hell in nearly 900 select movie theaters on September 16th, 17th and 18th, 2019 through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network. Fathom will broadcast the unrated version to theaters along with unique bonus content.
Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been recruited to write the score for Soul, a new animated movie from Pixar, which is a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company.
Set to hit theaters in June 2020, Soul tells the story of a disillusioned middle-school band teacher named Joe, voiced by Jamie Foxx, who yearns to be a professional jazz musician. He finally gets the job of a lifetime, but is accidentally killed and finds himself at the You Seminar, a celestial workshop where souls are created and given personality traits before they inhabit real humans.
At the You Seminar, Joe meets a new soul nicknamed 22, voiced by Tina Fey, who has avoided going to Earth altogether. However, Joe and 22 eventually work together to find a way to get Joe back to Earth, traveling through cosmic realms along the way.
Along with Foxx and Fey, the film stars Questlove, Daveed Diggs, and Phylicia Rashad. It’s being directed by Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, who directed Up and Inside Out.
Reznor and Ross have scored a number of films, including The Social Network — for which they won an Oscar — The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, Patriots Day and most recently Bird Box and Mid90s. Coming up are scores for the musical drama Waves, the thriller The Woman In The Window and the upcoming Watchmen series on HBO.
Ozzy Osbourne has revealed that he’ll release a box set featuring his entire catalog of solo material on vinyl later this year. The 16-disc, 173-song limited edition package is titled See You On The Other Side and it will arrive on November 29th.
In addition to all 10 of Ozzy’s solo albums, the set will contain the Mr. Crowley EP, the Tribute double live album, the Just Say Ozzy EP, Live & Loud and Live At Budokan. A collection of non-LP tracks titled Flippin’ The B-Side will also be included.
A flexi-disc with a never-before-released demo of “See You On The Other Side” will also come with the box.
Ozzy said in a statement, “This one’s the most elaborate collection so far. It’s very well thought-out and well put together. It’s got everything in there that you possibly could want and some surprises along the way. The sound of a vinyl record is different, and I do believe that vinyl sounds better.”
Each disc will be presented on 150-gram, hand-pressed, multi-colored splatter vinyl. The set will also contain 10 newly designed posters and 12 “augmented reality experiences,” details of which will be revealed in the near future. Ozzy will sign each box set.
Finally, we want to wish a Happy Birthday to Tyler Connolly of Theory of a Deadman! Have a great day everyone!
